REASONS WHY INEC RESHEDULED THE 2019 ELECTION DATE

After an emergency meeting held around 2.30am, today, 16th February, 2019. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC postponed and rescheduled the 2019 General Election to a week today, 23rd February, 2019 and the Governorship Election rescheduled to the 9th of March, 2019.

Nothing happens for no reason, INEC has been having a good number of problems within the week before the election date and it was  a hard decision for the commission to make. The INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu said that;

"Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible"

He said, “consequently, the Commission has decided to reschedule the Presidential and National Assembly Elections to Saturday, 23rd February 2019. Furthermore, the Governorship, State House of Assembly and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections is rescheduled to Saturday 9th March 2019. This will afford the Commission the opportunity to address identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of our elections.

“This was a difficult decision for the Commission to take, but necessary for the successful delivery of the elections and the consolidation of our democracy.

“The Commission will meet key stakeholders to update them on this development at 2pm on Saturday, 16th February 2019 at the Abuja lnternational Conference Centre”, he added.

These are the alleged reason and the current problems INEC has been having before rescheduled election date.

1) Ekiti, the former governor of the state, Ayo Fayose, accused INEC of deliberately hoarding materials for the presidential, Senate and House of Representatives elections in some states to frustrate the PDP.

2) On Friday, The Recident Electoral Comissioner of INEC in Niger State, Samuel Egwu reported that ballot papers meant for Niger East and North senatorial zones are missing.

3) 4 days ago it was reported that INEC office in Awka, Anambara state capital went on fire and burnt down the impontant properties inside it. No staff was injured.
